14th March Nothing to cluck about

A week ago today I had a really enjoyable run at the Wingerworth Wobble, one in which I surprised myself at how well I ran, finishing ahead of two people I would have expected to be beaten by.

I even enjoyed a mid week dalliance with the Hucknall Harriers and a 4 miles jolly around the means streets of Hucknall on Wednesday night. Seven days on from wobbling my way round Wingerworth, I have once again surprised myself but this time by how poorly I ran and how much I didn't enjoy completing the Chicken run.

The 25 mile drive over to Chinley was lovely, the weather was 'Goldilocks', not too cold and certainly not too hot. I even had 5 members of Stonehill Runners there for company. I just wasn't there, physically, mentally or emotionally. So much so that I abandoned the longer 14.5km route in favour of the shorter 10km jolly and then managed to run that distance almost 10 mins slower than I did last year. Well I say ran if you use that term to mean power walk up anything with an uphill gradient.

Admittedly the ground under foot was a mixture of ankle deep mud, puddle strewn trails or rocky descents that at times felt as if I were navigating my way down a stream. But those are all just excuses. Today I just wasn't at the races. Thank God I changed my plans not just from the 14.5km route today but from the 21 miles jolly I had booked myself on at the start of the year.

Interestingly only 46 people ran the 10km short course compared to 241 who chose to opt for the 14.5km version.
