6th August Getting some perspective (R37)
Sometimes it takes someone else to put things into perspective. Yesterday, just 48 hours after doing the Dipper, I joined the Ravenshead Runners for a four mile jolly aound the fire tracks in Thieves Wood.
Waiting for the group to gather we caught up on how each other was feeling. I revealed that I was feeling tired as a result of my weekend exploits. And without wishing to blow my own trumpet (my short hamstrings mean I can't even get close these days) I did drop into conversation the hills, the lack of marshals and route markings, the extra distance on top of the expected 15 miles and all the kit I had to carry.
Whether or not people were 'impressed' I don't know but its always good to get my excuses in right at the start in case my legs began to feel heavy past way round. As we ran we chatted, something I used to struggle doing, until I was suddenly gasping.
Not by the run itself but by the revelation that the person jogging along next to me with her dog Lizzie (strange how I remember the dog's name and not the persons!!) had covered 47 miles at the weekend doing something called the Big School run at Worsop College, an event that invites people to see how far they could run in 12 hours. 47 miles...FFS!
Talk about putting things into perspective;it made my 16 mile effort seem positively feeble in comparison especially as she then continued to leave me trailing in her dust with not a sight of aches or pain in her legs.
Still at least I wasn't exaggerating when I told you that some of those hills we run up were steep!!!
