15th August The Goldilocks one (R39)
Last night was a time to stay local and run with the Hucknall Harriers on one of their innovative 'map' runs. The principle behind it is that four run leaders have a particular route locked into their phone and then those who have assembled get to choose which of the runs they would like to join.
The choice is normally dependent on how far you would like to run and at what speed that particular run will proceed, with the longer runs normally catering for the greyhounds in the group.
Tonight the options were 3, 5, 7 or 10 miles starting off together at the Burnstump pub and then splitting into our different groups at the first road crossing. The only issue with large groups is that it takes ages for everyone to decide which group they are going to join.
Not having run since Ricky's Race last week, mainly due to the excessive temperatures, I plumped for the Goldilocks route ie 5 mile route, one that was not too far, not too short, just right. This turned out to be the most popular one with almost a dozen runners picking the same option.
And off we went, snaking our way through the woods, trying not to trip up over the gnarly roots that criss crossed the various trails. The weather was humid, the pace was 'reasonable', the route was fairly friendly and the group quite chatty as we ran. Well as chatty as you can be whilst fighting for breath.
If I am lucky we might bet another 6 weeks before the nights start to draw in and I either need to prepare to plod the same routes on the pavements of Ravensworth for a few months or find where I have put my headtorch for some illuminated jollies through the woods. So let's make the most of the light nights and the freedom to run.
