16th July Recovery in the rain (R31)
There are not many certainties in life but one of them is that whenever I do a 5km Thieves Wood run with the Ravenshead Runners, we will never do the same route twice.
Sometimes I have a fleeting sense of deja vu as part of the run starts to look familiar, or pehaps its a run I have run in the opposite direction until within 200 yards I am completely lost again. Tonight was a point in case. We even ended up taking a wrong turn on the planned different route which made it even more different than we had planned!
It was what I am told is called a 'recovery run' ie an easy paced, slower than normal, short distsnce run done after one that has been how shall I put it rather more taxing. The aim is to keep the muscles moving and flush out any residual lactic acid and tightness that might be lingering.
It's something I don't normally do prefering in my sadistic way to have legs like Bambi and feel all the oohs and ahhs of every muscle ache a couple of days after a long run. Today however I decided to run only 48 hours after completing the Crich Monument race. And a mere 24 hours before I am due to run the Pint and Pork Scratchings event on Tuesday. More of that later in the week.
So a group of 10 of us hit the trails in a gentle downpour of rain that had been promised and which well and truly materialised. But as someone in the group said you can only get so wet, and to be honest in amongst the trees I think we missed the worst / best of it. 3 miles later and my legs had not seized up and so perhaps this is the way to go in future; run the day after I have run to ensure I can run again quicker , sorry I meant sooner, than I can normally do.
