24th June Care free in Corfu

If it’s Monday then it must be Corfu, famous for, uhm, well apart from the Durrell family, neither of us was really sure. And it promised to be a busy day ashore with four cruise ships due in port which is the most we have had on this entire trip.
Again we were ashore on the B of the bang and in Corfu town itself not long after 8.30am with the temperature an already humid 27 degrees.

It was a very pleasant place without there really being anything spectacular about it. A mix of wide pedestrianised boulevards, concealed squares, and narrow streets that became increasingly congested and difficult to navigate as the ships spewed up their cargos on shore. And above us the sight and sounds of hundreds of swallows darted back and forth between the rooftops

But it was nice just to sit and people watch whether that be having a coffee at a café obviously frequented my locals or an ice cold beer sat on Liberty Street watching the various tour groups go by.

After yesterdays exertions we have planned that today would be an easy day and so there were plenty of pauses, plenty of sit downs interspersed with what could only be described as leisurely strolls between benches.

We did nearly have our first people to miss the ships departure today as one couple nonchalantly sauntered back on board to a ringing round of applause from everyone up on the high decks, a full 25 mins after the ship was due to set sail. We can only assume they hadn’t seen the 4.30pm departure time and thought it was the usual 5.30pm sail away.

With over £100 of our on board credit still left to spend before Thursday we decided to go to another dining experience, The Glass House for dinner. We had dropped in after the theatre last night for a lovely glad of port and TOM seemed to like the menu so thought we’d give it a whirl as no booking was required. And what a great choice it was.

The sea bass served with jasmine rice and a prawn and coconut curry was the best meal I have had on this entire trip. The curry was to die for and far better than those offered in the Indian themed Sindhu restaurant. And I won’t mention the fact that we wounded off the meal with six, yes six puddings between us.  In fact TOM was so impressed that he fell over!!!

Then it was another set by The Privateers, who included one acapella number (where the red rose grows??) and a folk version the Gladys Knight song ‘Midnight train to Georgia’ that was one of the best things I have ever heard. Both of them were utterly sublime.

Down in the Manhattan bar, Yzzy and her 'Siren of the Seas' set was very funny but a bit loud for our ageing ears and so we beat a retreat to the blue bar for a port and a people watch seeing as we gain an hour in bed overnight moving as we are from Greece to Italy.
