7th March Not Unfortunate in the slightest

Whenever we are away, if it is at all possible, TOM and I like to try and catch a show. Here in Liverpool it was no exception and so we headed to the Playhouse to catch the beginning of the UK tour for Unfortunate: Ursulla the Sea Witch.

Now for those of you for whom that doesn't ring any bells, it didn't with either of us either but its description of being brash, bawdy, fierce and filthy made it a must see. Especially as it turned out to be all of those and more!!

What we discovered is that Ursulla is a character in the Disney film 'The Little Mermaid', which as you might imagine isn't currently on my list of 100 best films watched. But where Wicked has successfully rehabilitated the reputation of the ‘Wicked Witch of the West’, in 'Unfortunate', we were treated to the ‘untold story of Ursula the Sea Witch’, one which had its tongue firmly in cheek.

This parody was quite definitely not for family viewing, being deliberately tasteless, often gloriously and hilariously so with the superb cast leaving any inhibitions they might have had very firmly in the dressing room. The songs was fantastic, especially 'Sucking on you', 'Unfortunate', 'Where the dicks are', and 'We didn't make it to Disney', featuring all the ugly and undesirable sea creatures.

The costumes and visuals in this production were stunning and the whole evening was an unexpected treat that we both really enjoyed. Our only gripe is that sometimes during the emsemble numbers everythign was amplified to such a degree that some of the words got lost in the mix, something others around us also struggled with, so it was not just our ageing aural equipment at fault.

If you enjoy a really fun night out then go and Ursulla Squirt wrap her tentacles around you while you can.
