11th January Dealing with the big D

Sometimes life throws a curve ball right out of the blue. One that shakes you up. Today is one of those days because it appears that I shall be celebrating my 60th birthday next week as a Type 2 Diabetic.

As part of the Well Man initiative I was invited to go and have a blood test on my local GPs. I was then invited to go and repeat the blood test a week or so later. I was then invited in to see the nurse where I was informed that despite not having put on any weight since my last check up in 2014 (I've just redistributed it around my waist), having the kidney function of a 21 year old and the BP of an athlete (or words to that effect), I also have high cholesterol and sugar levels. It appears I am not a Well Man.

So much so that I have bypassed the 'you are heading towards being diabetic' to a fully paid up member of the Type 2 club. Which as you might imagine has been somewhat discombobulating. I am aware that it is not life threatening but it certainly promises to be life changing with regular annual appointments to check eyes, feet (for signs of peripheral neuropathy), BP and off course cholesterol and sugar levels. It also means going on medication (not injections) which for someone who has got to the the age of 60 (almost) without ever taking any long term tablets is another life change.

All of which goes a long way to explaining why I have felt so run down / tired lately, together. Thankfully on the plus side I managed to tick the 'sufficient exercise' box, although when I asked the nurse if the medication would help me run and quicker, she simply looked me up and down before replying...possibly not!!!

In many ways I am glad that it has been picked up now so that something can be done asap. I just don't know how I am going to break the news to TOM that he is going to have to empty the contents of the full biscuit tin all on his own. Unless off course I go big, go out with a BANG and have one last blow out!! I'm sure its what the diabestic nurse would want.
