27th August John and 'his Dad' get impish in Lincoln
Oh how I did giggle and guffaw when the host of the Airb&b we stayed at in Hull left the following comment re our visit...John and his Dad were lovely guests. 'Dad' didn't find it quite so amusing for some reason, whereas my sides are still sore from laughing so much.
So having had more than enough of Skegvegas for one lifetime, Father and Son headed inland from the Costa del Cheap and towards the final destination on out whistlestop tour, a place famous for its links with the Magna Carta, the city of Lincoln, and our gorgeous airB&B, less than a km from the cathedral.
This is a place not to be confused, as Google seemed to be, with Abraham Lincoln, Lincoln Nebraska or the Lincoln automobile. And in answer to the question why Lincoln, well after Skegness, anywhere would have been an improvement.
Lincoln is yet another city that has succumed to the art trail, this time the installations being Imps. According to a 14th-century legend, two mischievous creatures called imps were sent by Satan to do evil work on Earth. After causing mayhem in Northern England, the two imps headed to Lincoln Cathedral, where they smashed tables and chairs and tripped up the Bishop.
When an angel came out of a book of hymns and told them to stop, one of the imps was brave and started throwing rocks at the angel, but the other imp cowered under the broken tables and chairs. The angel turned the first imp to stone, giving the second imp a chance to escape. It is said that even on still days, it is always windy around the cathedral, which is infact caused by the second imp circling the building looking for his friend.
Compared to other such art trails we have seen over the past few years, and certainly comared to the stunning Hares in Norwich a couple of years back, these seemed quite naive and we struggled to understand why particular statues were called what they were. But as we wandered around the city, by Brayford waterfront, down what is known as 'Steep Street' for a very good reason, enjoyed another lunc in 'Spoons' and enjoyed an early evening pint of Dark Fruit watching the sun suddenly appear to illuminate the front of the Cathedral, well they did provide the opportunity for my favourite photo from the trip as seen above.
